Michelle first looks at her own environment as a fundamental of photographic exploration. As such her ideas spring from the things going on around her or what she sources along the way.
Michelle chooses to present her work in non-linear narratives, though it is often codified by stylistic, tonal or other elements that the reader is able to assemble without too much interference from the 'author'.
Through her strong photographic relationships with human and non-human animals, Michelle’s work suggests a moment in time, one which her photographic subjects allow her to create around them. Michelle enjoys experimenting with a variety of techniques to present a voice for her non-human photographic subjects, with a visceral recognition of individuality as she presents images that contribute a very forthright depiction of animals into the art space.
Michelle is motivated by 'found' light (though she is happy to create light where needs be). The former St John's Orphanage, Goulburn - now barely standing is where, immediately connected to the space, Michelle found her centre and reconnected with her creative self after a long absence. Her collection of images on the former boys' home, uses her connection with the foundling orphanage to find presence and traces of memory in what appears to be a derelict building. Through her work, Michelle has connected with former residents to bring together a perhaps unexpected video narrative. Her work with this labour of love continues.
She studied Photojournalism at La Trobe University and Arts at The University of Melbourne and The University of Manchester, majoring in creative writing: poetry.
Michelle's artwork is included in private collections in Australia and Europe.
Michelle has been published in print and digital media and is available for commercial and commissioned work by special appointment.
Michelle lives in Canberra, Australia.
